The focus on menopause: Book presentation with Stefanie de Velasco in Berlin!
Frankfurter Allee 14a, 10247 Berlin, Deutschland - On June 23, 2025, the district mayor Clara Herrmann announced that the author Stefanie de Velasco will present her new book “Hot. Declaration of Love to the menopause”. The event will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the district central library Pablo Neruda in Berlin. The library's garden will be hosting of this book presentation, whereby in bad weather it will be moved to the library. Admission is free, but prior registration is required.
Stefanie de Velasco deals intensively with the topic of menopause in her book and illuminates the associated social challenges. As reports [Stefanie de Velasco] (https://stef-develasco.com/buecher/heiss-liebeserklarung-an-die-change years), she describes her very personal experiences with the menopause, which was connected to her with a shock of gray hair, sleep deprivation and uncontrolled rage. In her work, she criticizes the negative social perception of this phase of life, which is often shaped by taboos and is often hushed up.
social challenges of menopause
statistics show that in 2024 around 9 million women in Germany between the ages of 40 and 55 are potentially in menopause. This time is often associated with physical and emotional challenges that can influence not only the women concerned themselves, but also their environment in social and professional life. According to a [study] (https://www.menot break.com/studie2024), many women suffer from complaints for years that reduce their quality of life significantly, which often leads to isolation and relationship problems.
The conscious examination of this topic is urgently necessary to reduce the stigma associated with menopause. In her book, de Velasco asks whether the menopause could not be the beginning of a new identity, a point that many women do not take seriously. This illustrates the need for more knowledge and support in this phase of life, as well as the initiative "Me_not_Bause" promotes.
The position of the author
As a daughter of Spanish immigrants, Stefanie de Velasco studied European ethnology at universities in Bonn, Berlin and Warsaw and now lives as a freelance author in Berlin. In addition to "hot", she has been publishing books for several years, including "Tigermilch" (2013), "No part of the world" (2019) and "The grass on our website" (2024). Her writings show their talent to interweave personal and social issues with each other and link to important discourses.
The event on July 9, moderated by Gesa Ufer von Radioeins, not only offers a platform for the book presentation, but should also enable an open exchange about menopause and their perception in society. A dialogue between women and men can dismantle misunderstandings and the topic can be tabooed.
