Roma flag is raised to the international Roma Day

On Monday, April 8, 2024, district mayor Nadja Zivkovic and district councilor Heike Wessoly will have the Roma flag on the Alice Salomon Platz on the occasion of the Roma International Day. The day of action has now established itself worldwide and is used to draw attention to the centuries-old cultural tradition as well as the discrimination and persecution of Roma minority.

In Germany, many members of the Roma are still excluded due to their ethnicity and their social situation and are often exposed to discrimination and attacks. The exact number of Roma living in Germany is not known as a ethnic minority due to a lack of recording. In recent years, many Roma have moved to Germany from Romania and Bulgaria, and due to the pandemic and the Ukraine War, other people from Eastern Europe have fled to Germany.

The International Roma Day was launched to draw attention to the discrimination and persecution of the Roma in history and present. The flag ranging at the town hall is said to set a visible sign of global movement 53 years after the first world stream of worldwong, which stands for respect, equality and against exclusion and discrimination. At the same time, flag ratio is reminiscent of the victims of the forced camp in Berlin Marzahn, which existed between 1936 and 1943.

table with relevant information on the topic:

| Year | Event |
| —— | —————————————— |
| 1971 | First world streamcoongress in London |
| 2007 | European Parliament explains the international Roma |
| 2011 | Farewell Action Plan for Inclusion and Participation by Roma in Germany |

The International Roma Day is therefore an important symbol for the recognition and appreciation of the Roma culture as well as for the fight against discrimination and exclusion. Restricting the flags on Alice-Salomon-Platz underlines this message and is reminiscent of the need to work for the rights and equal rights of Roma.
