Rat feeding ban in Marzahn-Hellersdorf: District office takes action

The Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office has issued a general decree prohibiting the display of food and feed for rats. This is done to curb the excessive rat population in the district and prevent the rodents from spreading pathogens. The ban applies throughout the district and particularly affects public streets, squares, green spaces, playgrounds, hospitals and care facilities.

Gordon Lemm, district councilor for youth, family and health, emphasizes the need to ensure that rats are not unintentionally fed, especially when feeding pigeons. Rats can transmit diseases to humans, which is why the uncontrolled spread in public spaces must be contained. In other districts of Berlin, playgrounds even had to be closed due to rat infestations. The ban on feeding rats is intended to avoid such a situation in Marzahn-Hellersdorf.

Failure to comply with the requirements can result in fines, depending on the type of violation and feeding location. The general order has been published in the Berlin Official Gazette and contains legally binding details.
