Lichtenberg calls Queer Advisory Board - Start am Magnus Hirschfeld Day

On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the Lichtenberg district office decided to found a Queer Advisory Board, which will hold its first regular meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. This decision falls together with the first celebration of the Magnus Hirschfeld day in Berlin, on the occasion of the day of birthday and death of the German doctor and sex researcher Magnus Hirschfeld. Hirschfeld, who was gay, socialist and Jew, founded the first Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin in 1919 and researched the variety of sexuality there.

District Mayor Martin Schaefer from the CDU emphasizes the importance of the queer advisory board for the district of Lichtenberg and the importance of Magnus Hirschfeld Tag. The establishment of the advisory board and the decision to name the members on this special day should strengthen the acceptance and visibility of people with different sexual orientations and gender identities. This is done as part of the "Queer History Month", which is celebrated in Berlin from May 1st to 31st.

The Queer Advisory Board Lichtenberg consists of 16 representatives of various clubs and organizations, including the AG Queer Lichtenberg, Blu: Boks Berlin, FZM*Feminist Center for Migrants and Lesbian*Life Family (Les*Lefam) e.V. In addition, six individuals belong to the Advisory Board. The first meeting of the Queer Advisory Board will not take place in public, more information will be published on the website of the diversity and queer officers of Berlin.

It is an important measure to strengthen the rights and interests of LGBTQ+personnel in Lichtenberg and reflect the diversity of the district community. The memory of Magnus Hirschfeld and the work of the Queer Advisory Board go well together, since Hirschfeld held a pioneering role in research and acceptance of sexual diversity. It is a step towards a more inclusive and various society.
