Controversy about planned refugee village on Thielallee
On the property Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, the Senate plans to build a container village for 260 refugees, which, however, encounters resistance. The Free University (FU) is concerned because it wants to build a building for teaching and research. The President of the FU, Günter Ziegler, was surprised by the Senate plans and emphasized that the university management had not approved the project.
The FU has supported people who have already refugee in the past, but pointed out that the site is urgently needed for its own construction projects after 2023. The university proposes to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Institute as an alternative emergency shelters. Despite the FU's need for renovation, there are currently no other areas available.
The refugee coordinator Albrecht Broemme is currently examining various urban areas for refugee accommodation. He emphasizes that the accommodation of refugees on the wasting area of the FU is possible as long as no new building is created. The Senate decided to build 16 other container villages at the end of March because the need for living space for refugees is great.
The resistance to the planned container village on the unibles area in Dahlem reflects the discrepancy between the needs of the refugees and the interests of residents and institutions. Critics accuse the FU to crumble its cosmopolitan facade because it speaks against the temporary accommodation of refugees. The discussion about the accommodation of refugees illustrates the tensions and challenges in dealing with the refugee crisis.
