The renowned forensic doctor Michael Tsokos, who was head of forensic medicine at the Berlin Charité until the end of 2023, spoke in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung about his decision to leave the Charité. Tsokos emphasized that the university's independence was of great importance to him and pointed out that in his eyes the Charité had become too political. In particular, he criticized the increasing influence of the zeitgeist on the institution. In addition, Tsokos highlighted the deterioration of the lecturer-student ratio during the Corona period. He complained that student training in forensic medicine at the Charité had suffered significantly.
Tsokos explained that he has always viewed teaching and imparting knowledge as an essential task in forensic medicine. Nevertheless, the time spent teaching was increasingly reduced over the years, which led him to end his work at the Charité. The forensic doctor emphasized that the Charité had become an anonymous large-scale operation that was too heavily fiscally controlled.
Regarding the pandemic, Tsokos emphasized that the discussion about whether more autopsies were necessary was pointless because politicians ultimately decided on the measures. He expressed criticism that all deaths in which the deceased tested positive for the coronavirus at the time of death were counted as corona deaths, regardless of the actual cause of death. Tsokos criticized the fact that politicians had deliberately refrained from distinguishing between “with” and “on” Corona in order to increase the numbers.
Tsokos also spoke about the need for better post-mortem examinations in Germany. He emphasized that there are still too many overlooked homicides and criticized the fact that family doctors are often not sufficiently trained to carry out a correct post-mortem examination. Tsokos called for better training for doctors who carry out post-mortem examinations in order to prevent these abuses.
