More and more overweight people in Berlin and Brandenburg - AOK evaluation shows worrying trend
More and more people in the Berlin and Brandenburg region suffer from very overweight, as an evaluation of the AOK Nordost shows. In Brandenburg in particular, the proportion of heavily overweight people has increased significantly in the past ten years. While in 2021 around 13 percent of the AOK insured were obese in Brandenburg, this proportion was still nine percent ten years ago.
Upprinted to the entire population, this means that around 313,000 people in Brandenburg are currently very overweight. However, there are large regional differences. In the Potsdam district of Babelsberg Nord, for example, only six percent of the insured are obese, while it is up to 41 percent in some districts of Uebigau-Wahrenbrück (Elbe-Elster).
There is also a similar development in Berlin, but at a lower level. In 2021, about eleven percent of the AOK insured were obese in the capital, while it was eight percent ten years ago. This corresponds to around 380,000 people in Berlin.
The proportion of obesity diagnoses in the neighborhood around Immanuelkirchstrasse in the Prenzlauer Berg (six percent) is particularly low, while in Oberspree (Treptow-Köpenick) around 19 percent of the residents are very overweight.
The AOK Nordost indicates that strong overweight increases the risk of a number of diseases. Affected people therefore often suffer from back pain, asthma, depression, high blood pressure and diabetes. The risk of certain cancer is also significantly increased by overweight.
However, it should be noted that the evaluation of the AOK Nordost is based on medical diagnoses and the actual number of those affected is probably higher, since not all people with obesity were recorded.Source: RBB24 Inforadio, 01.08.2023
