Same genders, same traffic lights: Why not show all forms of love?

Same genders, same traffic lights: Why not show all forms of love?

The mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Clara Herrmann, made an application in June to replace the traffic light male with same-sex couples. It wants to improve the visibility of the LGBTIQ community and set a visible sign of openness, tolerance and diversity. Senator Manja Schreiner is open to this idea and would like to examine the application benevolently.

There are already different cities in Germany that have installed homosexual traffic lights. Examples of this are Frankfurt/Main, Cologne, Marburg and Hanover. Other pictograms have already been used, such as an "Otto walk-at-time spamper" in Emden or a "Karl-Marx-Lamp" in Trier. In Fürstenwalde, the first traffic light woman was even introduced eleven years ago to wore a skirt and braids. Two years later there was the demand for further traffic light women in Berlin, but with a modern and confident appearance.

According to the guidelines for light signal systems (Rilsa), different forms of the traffic light male are actually not allowed. However, the traffic authorities tolerate you as long as a standing symbol and a running symbol can be seen on the red traffic light.

A study by the city administration in Vienna has shown that pedestrian lights that show a couple are safer. Due to the larger light surface and the better recognizability of the light sign, the safety of pedestrians is improved. In Vienna since 2015 not only the same-sex, but also a man-woman pairs have been shown.

A possible option for Berlin would therefore be not only to present homosexual couples on the traffic lights, but also all possible combinations of couple. A “family spare” with a child would also be considered. This would best represent the diversity of the mayor Herrmann.

Overall, the idea is to replace the traffic light male with same -sex couples in order to make an opportunity to make openness, tolerance and diversity visible. There are already experience with various pictograms in other cities that show that this can be implemented. It remains to be seen whether Clara Herrmann's application will be implemented in Berlin.
