Health Office Lichtenberg is looking for a new location: current problems and planned improvements
New location for Lichtenberg Health Office planned
The Lichtenberg health department in Berlin must find a new location due to the structural and functional condition of the current building. This was announced by Ellen Haußdörfer, the State Secretary for Health and Care in Berlin. So far, the health department was housed in a state-owned building at Alfred-Kowalke-Straße 24, which, however, does not meet minimum hygienic requirements. The building was built as accommodation for foreign workers in the 1980s and has so far been insufficiently repaired.
The structural condition of the building is in poor condition. In February there was a water slump and in March the heating system failed, which dropped the room temperatures to 15 to 18 degrees. The health department does not meet the structural requirements that are necessary for a medical facility. State Secretary Ellen Haußdörfer lists further defects, such as a elevator for twin strollers, an unsuitable staircase for emergencies, a ban on entering for the balcony due to the risk of collapse and damaged linoleum floors. The sanitary areas are also not hygienically cleaned due to damage and the sanitary fittings and toilets are outdated. Most windows are leaking and the outer facade is rotten.
The most urgent renovation work, such as the exchange of the dilapidated windows, the exchange of damaged floor coverings and painting work after internal move, will be carried out this year by the district facility management. Further improvements are not planned for economic reasons, since the building is to be abandoned in perspective as an office building. However, it will take some time before a new location is found and rented and the health department can move.
