Common commitment: Animal protection law should be revised in a practical way

In a powerful campaign for the well -being of the animals, 42 associations from the areas of animal husbandry, breeding, trade, species protection and veterinary profession have combined! Together they send a sign with an urgent position paper in which you are calling for a fundamental revision of the German Animal Welfare Act. The Association of Zoological Gardens (VDZ) makes it clear that the well -being of the animals not only has to be in the foreground, but also the law requires clear and practical rules for the animal owners!

"We are enthusiastic about the planned amendment to the Animal Welfare Act, because it enables us to further strengthen animal welfare in this country!" Cheers Jörg Junhold, President of the VDZ. The responsible attitude of animals is already the foundation of many zoo and animal lovers in Germany. Now it is important to continue this successful course and to promote a legal culture that focuses on animal welfare. But he also makes it clear: "There must be an improvement in the enforcement of the law, because this is the only way we can ensure the well -being of the animals sustainably!"

The focus is on animal welfare!

The signing associations emphasize unmistakably: The well -being of the animals has absolute priority! The quality of keeping and maintaining an animal is regarded as a crucial criterion. A flat -rate ban on certain animal species by a so -called positive list is therefore decidedly rejected. Such regulations do not bring real progress in animal welfare. This statement is underpinned by the results of the exopet study by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

Opportunities with the amendment use

The VDZ and its partners see a great opportunity in the amendment of the Animal Welfare Act to tackle the weaknesses in the animal welfare system. Many challenges would not have to do with lack of laws, but with the defective control and review of the existing regulations. "We need more personnel capacities and financial resources for the responsible authorities!"

In order to ensure more faster and effective implementation of animal welfare, the associations advocate a rapid update of the outdated general administrative regulations (AVV) to the Animal Welfare Act. In this way, the animal owners and authorities are to be offered more legal certainty. If you have any further questions and for information, the committed associations are available at any time!
