Memory of the victims of the Berlin Wall: Memorial event in Pankow
Next Tuesday, August 13, 2024, the deputy head of the district council of Pankow, David Paul, and district mayor Dr. Cordelia Koch, on the occasion of the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall at 2 p.m. in the Evangelical Cemetery in Weißensee, commemorate the Berlin wall sacrifice. A special focus is on the attempt to escape the then 18-year-old Peter Fechter, whose tragic fate is still a symbol of the inhumanity of the wall.
The tragedy by Peter Fechter
62 years ago, in 1962, Peter Fechter ventured a desperate attempt to escape over the Berlin Wall. The tragic outcome of this act ended fatally when fencer died painfully from the consequences of his gunshot wounds. His fate illustrates the horrors and brutality that went hand in hand with the construction of the wall and demanded the countless human lives.
The meaning of commemoration
Until the wall was built in 1961, millions of people left the GDR for a variety of reasons - be it out of political persecution, personal freedom or economic hardship. The construction of the wall marked a turning point that brought an unforeseeable pain and suffering for countless families and friends. The memory of the wall sacrifices should therefore still be kept alive today in order to remember their fates and to illustrate the inhumanity of the wall building.
participation and commemoration
All interested citizens are welcome to take part in the memorial event and the wreath resignation. The event takes place in the cemetery of the Evangelical Resurrection Community in Weißensee. The meeting point is the churchyard administration at the entrance to the cemetery at Indira-Gandhi-Straße 110, 13088 Berlin. Together, the victims of the Berlin Wall should be reminded and thought.
