The increasing number of accidents and their significance
The topic of traffic safety and the dangers for pedestrians are particularly relevant when you look at the traffic accident statistics for 2023. According to the President of the German Road Safety Council (DVR), Manfred Wirsch, a total of 2,839 people died in traffic accidents in Germany in 2023, an increase of 1.8% compared to 2022. The number of injuries also rose by 1.5% to 366,557 people.
Of particular concern is the increase in the number of pedestrian deaths and injuries in recent years. To counteract this, Wirsch calls for greater consideration of pedestrian safety in traffic policy. The focus here is on measures such as the current amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), which will enable municipalities to set up zebra crossings without proof of a particular risk. A simplified allocation of areas for pedestrians and cyclists is also planned.
Today's investigation into the accident in Biesdorf is a further sign that road safety remains an important concern, especially for the most vulnerable road users such as pedestrians. Various institutions are working to improve the traffic situation in Berlin and prevent accidents.
