Escape and Hope: Mary and Joseph's Way to Bethlehem!

A special event focused on the Christmas story will be held at the City Library on November 27, 2025. In cooperation with the Andersen's Suitcase Theater, the story of Mary and Joseph, who have to flee to Bethlehem, comes to life. Maria is pregnant when the couple travels to the city, but all the townspeople refuse to give them shelter. So they find shelter in a stable where their son is born. Three learned men who follow a “king star” then arrive in Bethlehem to find and give a gift to the newborn child. They bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. This central element of the biblical story surrounding the birth of Jesus is celebrated annually at Christmas to commemorate the challenges that Mary and Joseph had to endure. The event offers free entry with registration required and will be documented through photos and videos that may be published. [Berlin.de].

Flight and despair

The story of Mary and Joseph has parallels to the experiences of many people who have to leave their homes due to danger to their lives and violence. Refugees are often forced to flee in precarious situations, often without the necessary supplies for the long journey. In addition, the boundaries between refugees and displaced people are often blurred. People who are forcibly removed from their home regions experience a double burden, which is also reflected in the story of Mary and Joseph, as they flee for fear of persecution. Planet Wissen highlights that in the last years of the war millions of people had to flee under the most extreme conditions.

The fates are often devastating. Many Germans fled the eastern regions between 1944 and 1945 as the Red Army advanced. This escape occurs at risk to their lives, often without sufficient medical care or food. Old and weak people have little chance of survival, while all train connections are interrupted and refugees have to leave the country by handcart or on foot.

An ending with hope

The Christmas Story as told in a picture book called “The Christmas Story?” is told, places emphasis on reflecting on these topics. You are encouraged to draw parallels and question your own actions in the context of escape and support for refugees. The biblical story ends with a feeling of security for Mary and Joseph, but this security remains an unattainable dream for many refugees. The picture book is aimed at children aged four and over and encourages them to examine their own perception and friendliness towards refugees. UNO refugee aid offers comprehensive information on this story and its significance in today's world.
