Experts warn of a possible great war between Israel and the Hezbollah
escalation in the Middle East: A dangerous situation
experts agree that nobody in the Middle East is really interested in a great war. Since the Gaza War against Hamas last October there have been battles and escalation levels at the border to Lebanon, but an open military discussion has been avoided as in 2006. But this could change now.
The attack on a soccer field in a Drusian village on the Golan heights has the potential to spark a major war. According to Israeli information, twelve children and adolescents died. Israel speaks of the deadliest attack since the Hamas attack on October 7th. The Hisbollah is said to have fired an Iranian falak rocket with a 53-kilogram explosive head. However, this information has not yet been confirmed. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains that the Hisbollah had exceeded “all red lines”. Prime Minister Netanyahu has broken off his trip to the USA and Israel's Air Force has already started retribution attacks on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. A counter reaction on the part of the Hisbollah is to be expected.
If the fights between Israel and the Hisbollah escalate to a major war, this would have unforeseeable consequences for both sides. In the north, two armies face each other with immense firepower. Iran has greatly upgraded the Hisbollah. If up to 3000 rockets are fired on Israel for weeks, the Iron Dome defense sign would no longer be sufficient. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned both parties on Sunday to act "with prudence". Hopefully it's not too late for that.
The conflict between Israel and the Hisbollah has the potential to plunge the Middle East into a devastating war again. The effects would not only be felt regionally, but also globally. The international community should try to prevent escalation and find a peaceful solution.
