ESG monitor 2024: German companies and governments disappoint expectations

The world speaks and the companies and governments do not listen! The fourth annual global ESG monitor from SEC Newgate shows us the sobering reality: trust in those responsible disappears-and that worries many citizens. This alarming result could shake the economy and politics vigorously!

In a comprehensive survey of more than 14,300 participants from 14 countries, the bitter truths have brought to light, which people think about the behavior of the environment, social affairs and corporate management (ESG). Almost three out of five respondents show their fingers on their governments and require responsibility - 58% are certain that there is a need to catch up here.

shocking results for Germany!

It becomes particularly dramatic when you take a look at Germany. Only 29% of German respondents believe that their country is on the right track! Compared to a global average of 47%, this is a sobering balance. Satisfaction with the government is also worrying with only 36%, and large companies also only receive the trust of 39% of the population. How can it be that 67% clearly demand a determined action against climate change and still in contrast, politics seems to stagnate?

The survey shows that people feel a strong need to take things into their own hands! A total of 57% demands from companies to become more active and to get involved in social issues. In addition, 44% expect a clear positioning on political issues - an urgent call for action!

trust deficit and clear demands

The results reveal an alarming confidence in corporate communication: 73% of those surveyed agree that companies should report more openly about their ESG measures. And the skepticism is great! Almost half of the respondents (44%) believe the melodious statements of large brands about their supposed successes in ESG affairs.

fiorenzo Tagliabue, Group CEO from SEC Newgate, speaks plain text: "The deficits in corporate communication are unmistakable!" It is high time that those responsible not only talk, but also act - and not only in the interests of their shareholders, but for the benefit of all stakeholders!

The current challenges that people are concerned with - such as climate change and increasing cost of living - require urgent answers, and the patience of the citizens is in the end. Hopefully companies and governments are now listening and finally putting their lips into practice!
