Dreame is planning an electric car factory in Brandenburg: concerns about the environment and transparency!

The company Dreame, a Chinese manufacturer of vacuum cleaners, plans to produce electric cars in Brandenburg. This information was initially spread by a citizens' initiative in Germany that was critical of Tesla. The activist Steffen Schorcht stated in the rbb podcast “Spreepolitik” that he was informed about the plans by a French journalist who is active in the water movement. Schorcht and his team researched and were able to find further clues in media from China, Singapore and the USA. They criticize the lack of transparency and citizen participation, as those affected mainly found out about the plans through Asian media, while the state government remained silent.

The area for the planned electric car factory could be close to the Tesla Gigafactory and is 1.2 times larger than the Tesla area. One of the possible locations is near Fürstenwalde, adjacent to Autobahn 10 and the Spree. The mayor of Fürstenwalde welcomes the prospect of new jobs and tax revenue. But Schorcht warns of the ecological consequences, as the area is largely covered with high forest, and points to the sensitivity of the river system close to the Spree.

Political reactions and concerns

Brandenburg's state government has confirmed contacts with Dreame, but Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) did not provide any further details about the talks. Dreame was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in Suzhou near Shanghai. The company boss Yu Hao, who holds around a third of the shares, is responsible for selecting the location in Germany. A team of almost 1,000 employees is already being assembled to build luxury electric cars, with the first vehicles announced for 2027.

The electric car market in China is highly competitive and many companies have already gone bankrupt. EU Commission tariffs on electric cars produced in China could be one reason why Dreame wants to produce in Europe. Experts express skepticism about Dreame's plans, while at the same time there is criticism of the possible settlement near the Tesla factory by the citizens' initiative. This initiative is planning a networking meeting for interested groups in Berlin and Brandenburg to publicly discuss the concerns.

Technological developments in the field of electromobility

The discussion about the establishment of Dreame comes against the background of a dynamically developing market for electromobility. Innovation projects such as bidirectional charging are becoming increasingly relevant. This technology allows electric cars to store electricity and release it back into the grid. From 2025, all electricity providers will be required to offer time-variable tariffs, which will further increase the attractiveness of bi-directional charging.

A general roadmap envisages bringing marketable products in the area of bidirectional charging onto the market by 2025, and almost 150 experts from around 75 companies are working together to reduce regulatory and technical hurdles. These developments could also have an impact on the future production of electric cars in Germany and demonstrate the potential of this new infrastructure.
