Dr. Motte celebrates 65 years: The love for the Loveparade lives on!

Berlin, Deutschland - On July 11, 2025, Dr. Motte, bourgeois Matthias Roingh, his 65th birthday. Born in Berlin from Spandau, is a central figure in the history of electronic music and rave culture. As a professional DJ, he has been active for 25 years and is considered a co -organizer of the first Love Parade, which took place on July 1, 1989. This event was launched in collaboration with his then partner Danielle DE Picciotto and was originally inspired by Brazilian carnival parades.

The Love Parade was founded not only as a party, but as a political demonstration to promote peace, joy and a fair food distribution. In total, the Love Parade took place seven times on the Kurfürstendamm before moving to the zoo in 1996. In 1999 the event reached a highlight with one and a half million visitors.

financial challenges and changes

dr. Motte belonged to a team of five that led Loveparade GmbH. Unlike many other events, no profits were released, but reserves were formed. But the situation changed drastically when the Loveparade 2001 was revoked the demonstration status. This led to considerable financial burdens and the need to sell the rights to the event to Rainer Schaller, the owner of the McFit fitness chain. Schaller saw the Love Parade as a marketing event for its chain.

The first years of the new millennium were nevertheless characterized by a strong sense of community. The Love Parade was a symbol of peace and cohesion. In 2001, a counter-event was even registered that occupied the planned route and presented the event with a new challenge. The Federal Constitutional Court declared music demonstrations part of freedom of expression, which further influenced public perception.

sustainable memories and the future

However, no sustainable financing concept was found from 2001, which led to the cancellation of the Love Parade in 2004 and 2005. Loveparade Berlin GmbH was faced with bankruptcy, and the brand was sold in November 2005. Even after the tragic accident in Duisburg in 2010, in which 21 people died, there were discussions about security and event management.

Rainer Schaller died in a plane crash in Costa Rica in 2022, which once again shaped the history of the Love Parade. Bit by bit, the legacy of the event by Dr. Moth kept upright. He is planning the fourth "Rave the Planet Parade", which is seen as the successor to the Loveparade and wants to carry the cultural and social values of the original event into the future. The look back shows how tight music and community in Berlin are interwoven and what a significant role the Love Parade played. rbb24 and rave the planet document this timeless influence of the rave culture in Germany.
