DLRG records a record for memberships - over 600,000 memberships 2023

The German Life Rettungs Society (DLRG) has a new record in the number of members. At the end of 2023 there were a total of 607,310 memberships, which corresponds to an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the previous year. The previous record from the previous year was directly exceeded. The President of the DLRG, Ute Vogt, emphasized that this result not only made proud, but also the great importance of the voluntary work of the lifeguards in society.

The DLRG's membership growth was affected by the measures for panda control and energy savings in the baths in 2022. In 2023, however, the swimming training of the volunteers was able to take place without restrictions, which led to an increased number of children up to the age of twelve. The number rose to a total of 189,063 children around 15,540. This result not only enables safe swimmers, but also lays the basis for the next generation of lifeguards.

The DLRG still wants to increase the number of volunteers in order to be more present at the bathing waters in summer and to teach more children to swim. The increase in membership among the 30- to 49-year-olds indicates that this is already successful. A total of 17 of the 18 regional associations recorded a membership growth, with the DLRG Hamburg growing the strongest in percentage. The state's highest member of the members remains Lower Saxony.

The DLRG has a total of 607,000 members who are financially supported by over 1.3 million sponsors. The organization has set itself the task of maintaining people from drowning by informing about water hazards, teaching people to swim and developing them in life swimming. In addition, over 42,000 lifeguards monitor the safety of bathers and water sports enthusiasts annually. The DLRG is also involved in local security and in population and disaster protection.
