The return of the tram: New connection in Moabit is causing enthusiasm among residents
tram runs again through Rathenower Straße in Moabit
After almost six decades, the time has finally come: a tram runs through Rathenower Straße in Moabit again. Jessica Juhnke, a tram driver from Hof Lichtenberg, had the honor of controlling the first train to drive the new route to Turmstrasse underground station. The reactions of the passers -by were positive and many asked questions such as: "When can I ride?" A precise date for the opening of the route is slowly emerging.
A passerby named Peter Wolf, who uses a walker, is already looking forward to the tram trips. He thinks it's good that he can soon take the Aldi tram because he can get on there much more easily than on the bus. In addition, it is always too full for him in the buses. Many other Moabiter are also enthusiastic about the tram because they are more ecological and more comfortable than bus trips. However, trees had to be felled for the project, a total of 85 pieces.
The news of the first trams on the 2210 meter long new line from the main train station to the Turmstrasse underground station spread quickly in the Berlin fan scene. Many tram enthusiasts gathered along the route to document the first trips. The voltage rose when the large yellow moon car drove to the side and the red and white traffic cones were removed from the rails. Then came the first train, followed by other cars that stopped several times to inspect the tracks and stops.
However, there are also problem areas on the route. There could be bottlenecks at the confluence of the Turmstrasse into Rathenower Straße, as the rails cut the road towards the main train station and a simultaneous turn with car traffic is not possible. Separate traffic light phases must be set up here, which can result in longer waiting times. There are also traffic light topics at the end of the Turmstrasse underground station, since pedestrians have to wait a minute to cross the tracks.
The section of the route is currently served by bus line 245, which runs in a tight clock. In the future, the M10 tram will go to the Moabiter center every five minutes during the main traffic. The travel time on the new construction phase should be eight minutes in both directions. The exact date for passenger operation on the new line has not yet been determined, but it will probably be in early September 2023.
tram fans are happy about the opening of the route to the Turmstrasse and see it great potential for Berlin. The project is not as economical as the expansion of the U-Bahn network, but it is cheaper and will have a positive impact on local transport. The tram is expected to carry up to 10,000 passengers a day. A fan emphasizes that it is good that the tram comes back to Moabit while a woman criticizes the costs and prefers to see more apartments in Berlin. However, one thing is certain: it will definitely be fully in the tram.
