CDU politician WadePhul calls for stronger European initiative for peace in the Middle East

In an emotional appeal, CDU foreign politician Johann WadePhul comments on the worrying developments in the Middle East. The deputy Union parliamentary group leader in the Bundestag has expressed his strong irritation about the current policy of the Israeli government. In an interview with RBB24 Inforadio on Friday, WadePhul emphasizes that many questions remain open whether all peaceful possibilities for solving the conflicts in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon were really exploited.

"We are watching too few steps of de -escalation!" Said WadePhul. "It is clear that Israel can always count on the support of Germany and the USA. But isn't it time to take friends in this region with you?" With this request, WadePhul urges a stronger role in dialogue with its neighbors and allies.

a dangerous signal flow

The CDU politician takes a sharp look at the chronology of the latest events. "It is striking that the military activities such as the attack on Hamas leader Hanija or the movements of Israeli troops take place in critical phases of negotiation." This behavior could finally tear the delicate thread of negotiations and endanger the chance of peace. "Again and again the progress in the conversations is becoming destroyed - that makes me very concerned!" He adds.

WADEPHUL explains that the situation for Israel is “existential” because it must defend itself against acts of terrorism in the Gaza strip and in the South Libanon. "These fighters are not normal combatants, and they only have one thing in mind: the destruction of Israel. That is why the situation is much more serious than we can imagine here," explains WadePhul and adds that the politics of the current Israeli government is difficult for him to understand.

a European step into the future

WADEPHUL calls for a committed European initiative to stabilize the situation in the Middle East. Such an undertaking is urgently necessary, even if it describes the current situation in Europe as "unfortunate": "The United States are in the election campaign, and neither the French president nor the German Chancellor are currently in a strong political position."

Nevertheless, WadePhul sees the need to ask Europe together with Great Britain to start a common European initiative. "It could be that the Federal Chancellor goes directly to the region with Emmanuel Macron and speaks to Netanyahu and the Arab states," he calls up to create a perspective for peace and stability.
