BUND demands money lock for motorway projects without climate protection planning

Berlin in the turmoil: The Federal Government has imposed the so -called “money lock” for the motorway projects! In a dramatic appeal, it is required not to provide any further funds for outdated planning as long as the environmental and climate protection criteria are not fully taken into account. Who is behind this brave step? Jens Hilgenberg, the head of transport policy at the BUND for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND), has spoken out loudly!

The financial debate picks up speed! "It is high time that the MPs of the budget committee step on the brakes!" Said Hilgenberg about the catastrophic plans. "Without the necessary information from Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) for the needs plan check of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, the health insurers must not be opened!" A clear appeal in reason and responsibility: As long as it is not clear how nature and climate protection are included in the motorway projects, the payment of funds must be stopped.

cost explosion and environmental risk!

In the existing plans, numerous projects are on the brink! These new and expansion projects for highways would be deleted in the upcoming need for examination. The reason? Most of them do not meet the required nature conservation requirements and could possibly damage nature even more. "We can no longer watch our environment endangered by unnecessary road construction projects!" Warns Hilgenberg.

Another alarming point are the massive cost increases that occur in many projects. "The expenses get out of hand! We cannot ignore that the most expensive and most environmentally harmful projects have to be stopped immediately and put on ice!" The MPs have to make it clear to the minister: Without clear priorities for the preservation of existing roads, no money flows into new plans.

What's next?

But what does this lock actually mean? A qualified blocking note is not uncommon in budget planning. This measure opens up the possibility of holding back money until the urgently needed information is presented. The transmission of the results announced by Minister Wissing for late summer 2024 promises to clarify soon. If the insight of the MPs comes in time, the approval of the funds for sensible projects could be realized this year.

The pressure on politics is increasing: the federal government not only calls for a shift in financing, but also a radical rethink in transport policy. "Without clear announcements to protect our nature and the environment, everything remains the same - and we must not allow ourselves that!"

The response from politics remains to be seen. Will the government fulfill the demands or will uncertainty over the further road construction in Germany escalate?
