Boris Pistorius Plant Purchase of 35 Leopard 2 tanks for Lithuania
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius plans to procure additional battle tanks to support the stationing of the Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania. According to a report by the newspaper “Die Welt”, 35 other Leopard 2 fighting tanks of the most modern rescue stand A8 are to be appointed from industry. So far, only 18 pieces had been ordered to compensate for corresponding taxes to Ukraine.
The Ministry of Defense has informed the Bundestag's budgetary committee about these plans, but did not make an official statement and pointed out the confidentiality of arms transactions. CDU budget politician Ingo Gädechens described the possible order as a correct step, even if the temporics may be delayed. The financing of the project is still open.
The delivery time for a Leopard 2 is about two years. The Brigade in Lithuania is to be officially put into service in 2025 and will be ready for use by 2027 at the latest to strengthen the securing of the NATO-East flank against potential Russian attacks.
