Berlin welcome classes: Hundreds of students fail at the transition

according to a report by www.morgenpost.de ,

In Berlin, hundreds of welcome students have not made the transition to a regular class after twelve months. Of a total of 11,299 students in welcome classes, around 6.5 percent remain longer, which corresponds to 729 children and adolescents. The differences between the districts are very large, with a rate of 0 to 35 percent.

The number of students in whom an application for remaining in the welcome class had to be made is particularly high in Lichtenberg, where 35 percent of the students did not make this transition. It is 30 percent in Neukölln. In contrast, over 95 percent of children and adolescents were able to switch to regular class in Pankow and the middle.

Most welcome class students come from Ukraine (37.98 percent), followed by Syria (10.51 percent) and “remaining Asia” such as Afghanistan (8.54 percent).

These figures show that the integration of migrant children into the Berlin school system continues to bring great challenges, especially with regard to language acquisition and the transition into regular classes. It can be seen that the support and integration of welcome students is different, depending on the district. This is an important aspect that shapes the educational landscape in Berlin and requires attention.
