Berlin slips again in the digitization ranking
in the Bitkom index "Smart City Index 2023" Berlin slipped to 24th place. Two years ago, the capital was still in the top ten, but since then it has lost digital development. The index evaluates various areas such as administration, IT and communication, energy and environment, mobility as well as society and education. Berlin cut off particularly well in the area of mobility and took fourth place. In terms of energy and environment, however, Berlin only reached 54th place.
As the index shows, Munich has reached first place and is therefore the smartest city in Germany. Hamburg and Cologne took second and third place. Potsdam, the only Brandenburg city in the ranking, took 48th place. In the area of mobility, however, it did well and reached ninth place. Berlin and Potsdam thus showed that both cities have made progress in terms of mobility.
The ranking demonstrates the dynamics in the area of the smart cities and emphasizes that smaller university cities such as Aachen, Osnabrück and Ulm can also be found in the top ten. This underlines the importance of a professional management of digitization and a joint commitment of politics, companies and civil society on site.
