Berlin calls for the economical handling of drinking water and plans to install water -saving devices in households
The drinking water supply in Berlin is currently secured, but water operations and environmental senator Manja Schreiner warn of a wasteful handling of water. Although Berlin has been spared long drought so far, the dry years have led to a rethink from 2019 to 2022. In order to be able to ensure the drinking water supply in the long term, careful handling of this important resource is required.
Especially private households use a lot of water, so it is important to save water where it is possible. Due to climate change and the consequences of the lignite exit, Berlin will be available in the future less water, while at the same time the number of people who need water increases. In order to counter this challenge, the use of water -saving devices in households and the watering of lawn or filling private pools is restricted.
In order to be prepared for extreme cases, falling groundwater levels are already simulated. According to water operating boss Christoph Donner, the heavy rains like last Monday are helpful and every drop counts.
