Berlin goes global: new partnerships for sustainable development!

Berlin, Deutschland - The district office Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf decided on June 6, 2025 two new international development partnerships. These partnerships are received with the city of Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka and the municipality of Bangangté in Kamerun and aim to improve the infrastructure and promote intercultural learning. A special focus is on the exchange of young people and cultural workers between the cities involved.

One of the main projects in Kalpitiya includes the establishment of an environmental education center, which is intended to support schools and local fishing communities. This is done through the imparting of sustainable environmental practices, which are of essential importance for the region. In Bangangté, the focus is on improving the water supply in residential areas to increase the health care and quality of life of the residents.

youth exchange and sustainability

The partnerships also include exchange programs for young people. Young people from Kalpitiya Berlin will visit in July, where they take part in events at the Nelson Mandela School and the Friedensburg secondary school. In autumn, Berlin young people are planned in Sri Lanka, where they will take part in a "beach up cleaning" and upcycling workshops. A project created by earlier exchange programs to found a school company on the subject of "Fair Trade" at the Friedensburg secondary school underlines the sustainable goals of these partnerships.

In spring 2026, a group of young people from Bangangté Berlin will visit Urban Gardening areas in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. These projects are mainly financed from third -party funds, which emphasizes the need for long -term partnerships with the global south, as district councilor Oliver Schruoffenger notes.

education initiatives for sustainable development

In parallel to these international projects, the non -profit organization New Hope and Light e.V. offers workshops on Tempelhofer Feld, which deals with technical and intercultural education for sustainable development. These workshops, which have a minimum duration of three hours, contain topics such as renewable energies and sustainability. A playful approach is followed in which children and adolescents can learn through experiments, such as the construction of solar cars.

The organization aims to anchor sustainability as a superordinate principle in all areas of life and promote a differentiated understanding of sustainability through educational projects in Germany and Africa. The offers are diverse and are aimed at schools, kindergartens and educational institutions to support global learning, as well as the network of Life Bildung Environmental Equal Opportunities.

This exchange of knowledge and ideas between local and international actors is crucial to promote both environmental awareness and intercultural skills. The benefits and appreciation of the different cultures come first, and the training of young people in these areas is seen as a long -term investment in a sustainable future.
