Prospective landscape architects of the TU Berlin present concepts for upgrading Friedrichstrasse

Friedrichstrasse in Berlin-Mitte is an area that has so far received little attention. In order to give this part of the eastern city center more attractiveness, 17 prospective landscape architects from the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) have dealt with the redesign. On Tuesday they presented their concepts for a section of Friedrichstrasse, which is one of the largest traffic policy points in the capital.
The street around the department store Galeries Lafayette was opened for pedestrians in January, but later released for car traffic. The landscape architects see potential in space and want to contribute to quality. The aim is to give Öden Strasse a new face and make it more attractive.
The students have developed different concepts. A team suggests making Friedrichstrasse a futuristic room sculpture. A continuous lighting that runs like a flash, as well as a cool water vapor crater and cladding overgrown with trees should enhance the area.
Another team would like to design Friedrichstrasse as a pedestrian area with purple concrete bands that run from Leipziger Straße to the street "Unter den Linden". These ligaments should serve as introductory elements and improve the street space. Trees are also to be planted in the southern sections of the street.
A third concept provides for Friedrichstrasse as a catwalk. Here, red ligaments that run across the entire length of the street should be the connecting element. The road should not be exactly, but should be offset. Green Islands are supposed to improve the street climate and the intersections are supposed to create attractive places with water features or playgrounds.
Another team focused on marking cycling and footpaths. With dark streaks made of cement, the street space is to be better structured and more clearly divided. Green shadow foyers with trees and light islands should set color accents.
These designs should serve as an impulses for the discussion and work professionally. It is proposed to carry out a realization competition to implement the best ideas. The landscape architects of the TU Berlin are committed to not only taking into account the needs of car traffic, but also to introduce non -commercial functions and elements for revival. Friedrichstrasse should, for example, offer space for dance courses, outdoor sports activities, playgrounds, seating and fragrant flowers.
It is suggested that the new stone places in Berlin are redesigned, such as Alexanderplatz or Washingtonplatz at the main train station.
The students have shown with their concepts that Friedrichstrasse has potential for a positive change. It is time to take on the future of the area professionally and to have a broad discussion about how the street can become more attractive. The proposals of the landscape architects can serve as a suggestion and offer the basis for further planning and transformation.
