Farewell to the old book bus: Treptow-Köpenick starts again!

The large book bus of the Treptow-Köpenick city library will be in use on July 11, 2025. After more than 20 years of service, the bus will no longer drive to the stops from Monday, July 14th. The old book bus covered around 133,000 kilometers during this time and was a central point of contact for reading friends in the area. The city library announced that a new book bus is already available, but the exact start date for regular operation remains uncertain. The final preparations are currently underway to make the new bus ready for use. The city library will provide information about all channels as soon as there is news and is planning a solemn inauguration of the new vehicle.

The new book bus, which is available in the garage of the driving library in the "Eva-Maria-Buch-Haus", has impressive dimensions of 12 meters in length and 3 meters. It is provided with modern exterior design and media equipment that offers space for a variety of media. With an engine of 290 hp, it fulfills the Euro 6d emissions standard. This even enables two stops to expand the stop plan in the environmental zone. The new bus will be equipped with around 4,000 media, including books, games, magazines, audio books and films that are suitable for the entire family.

The new book bus will start public stops from Monday to Friday and has a maximum service life of up to two hours per stop. Users can use a variety of services, including media lending, return, library account services and special events such as picture book cinema, reading hours and readings. Institutions to increase media literacy are also offered. The vehicle will have a standard bookstore bus equipment, including event equipment such as projector and canvas, as well as storage space for folding chairs and seat cushions.

The purchase of the new bookbus is an investment of around 500,000 euros, for which the district office Treptow-Köpenick acts as a procurement. The tender for the vehicle was carried out as an open procedure and the offers had to be submitted by May 30, 2024. The decision on the award will be based on life cycle costs and the quality of the offers, whereby cost 60 points and quality 40 points are put into the evaluation.

In addition to the media -technical highlights, the new book bus will offer a wheelchair -friendly access that makes it easier to use the vehicle with walkers and strollers. With a modern interior, which includes additional heating and air conditioning, a high quality of stay in all seasons is guaranteed. Burkhard Kajewicz, head of the driving library, expressed his relief about the new bus, which also enables participation in district street and district festivals.
