75 years of DGB: A strong voice for employees in Europe

On October 13, 1949, something historical happened in Munich: The German Trade Union Federation (DGB) was launched! Now, 75 years later, the Europa SPD proudly speaks of an indispensable pillar for the employees in Germany and all of Europe. Since its foundation, the DGB has not only united the German unions, but also contributed decisively to the foundation of the European Trade Union Federation. The message is clear: only together we are strong!

Gaby Bischoff, Vice President of the S&D and expert in labor and social policy, sums it up: "Without the German and European Trade Union Confederation, today's European social model would be unimaginable!" The DGB has been working tirelessly for the rights of employees and social justice for 75 years. The current challenges are huge because it is important to actively shape the transformation of our society - digital, ecologically and socially. It is crucial that the employees are not ignored. Bischoff demands: "For this we need future investments in training and further education and a strong participation in the workplace!"

a historical heritage and ambitious goals

Already Hans Böckler, the first chairman of the DGB, knew in 1949 that democracy needed more than just political freedom - it also has to penetrate into the business. This is still one of the core concerns of the S&D parliamentary group, which decisively works to enforce this principle at European level.

The DGB not only played a crucial role in the emergence of the minimum wage directive at European level. This guideline will ensure that millions of employees in Europe are protected from poverty. Another milestone was the posting directive, which for the first time binding the historical principle of "equal wages for the same work in the same place" - a great success in the history of employee rights!

common future for all employees

"The DGB and we European Social Democrats are united in striving for better working conditions all over Europe!" -That is the promise that the Europa-SPD submits. Regardless of whether it is about regulating subcontractor chains, strengthening participation or promoting equality: the goal is clear! European standards must be promoted and further developed in the sense of employees.

This 75th anniversary is not just a celebration, but an incentive for the upcoming challenges. Together, the social dimension of Europe will succeed, and the DGB remains an indispensable partner!
