23-year-old races through Berlin at Regennasser Strasse: charge of illegal car racing and negligent bodily harm
23-year-old defendant after illegal car racing in court
A 23-year-old man has to answer to the Tiergarten district court in Berlin after racing through the city at Regennasser Strasse and ultimately destroyed the car of a car sharing provider. The public prosecutor raised charges for illegal motor vehicle races and negligent bodily harm.
According to the indictment, the accused raced on February 11, 2023 at the Havelchaussee in the Grunewald at a speed of up to 149 kilometers per hour, although only speed 30 was allowed there. The public prosecutor, who has a special department for such cases, raised the indictment.
In the incident, the accused is said to have lost control of the vehicle when transitioning to the crown princess. The car overturned several times and finally landed on the roof. Fortunately, the accused and one of his passengers suffered only minor injuries. However, the electric car was completely destroyed, the damage incurred is around 30,000 euros.
Berlin is considered the hotspot of illegal car racing in Germany. Last year alone, the Berlin authorities initiated investigations against speeders in 755 cases. Higher penalties have been possible for such offenses since a change in the law in October 2017, since they have been upgraded from administrative offenses to crimes.
It remains to be seen how the Tiergarten district court decides in the current case and whether the accused is punished appropriately for his behavior.
