Numbers, data and facts: Fack of skilled workers in the healthcare system - new study 2024

This year's “Numbers, Data and Facts” brochure of IKK e.V., the advocacy of the guild health insurance funds, was published. The 60-page brochure is based on the latest data from 2023 and is aimed at actors in healthcare, political and media representatives as well as those interested in industry. One main topic of the brochure is the shortage of skilled workers in the healthcare system.

The shortage of skilled workers is a major challenge for the healthcare system, since the requirements for the medical care of an aging population can change and the quality of care for patients can affect. The guild health insurance companies see possible solutions in digitization, delegation and substitution, immigration and prevention. In order to illuminate this problem in more detail, the 29th platform Health of IKK e.V. took place in March 2024, in which scientists, politicians and actors in the health system demanded fundamental structural changes in health care and between health professions.

The brochure not only includes textual explanations on the shortage of skilled workers, but also corresponding data material and prepared graphics. The IKK e.V. would like to make a contribution to the debate and draw a look at new opportunities. Every year the compendium is published for “Numbers, data and facts” brochure to enable reliable assessments and decisions in the healthcare industry based on facts.

The brochure can be requested from Iris Kampf, press spokeswoman for IKK e.V. It is also available as a PDF download on the IKK e.V.

In Berlin, the shortage of skilled workers in the healthcare system is also noticeable. The aging population and the increasing need for medical care pose major challenges for hospitals and medical staff. Digitization can possibly make a contribution to the solution by making the workflow in the healthcare system more efficient and improving communication between different medical facilities. In addition, the delegation and substitution of tasks can reduce the workload of the specialists and to alleviate bottlenecks. An increased immigration of medical specialist personnel could also alleviate the shortage of skilled workers. In addition, prevention is an important starting point to promote the health of the population and thus reduce the demand for medical care in the long term.

It remains to be seen whether the structural changes discussed in March 2024 will be implemented in the healthcare system and between health professions and whether they will have a positive impact on the shortage of skilled workers. The "Numbers, Data and Facts" brochure of the IKK e.V. offers an important basis for the debates and decisions in this area.
