Decisive result expected: wild boar or lioness in Kleinmachnow?

The search for a suspected predator south of Berlin is entering the decisive phase. Experts began evaluating stool and hair samples on Monday to determine the animal's identity. Community spokeswoman Martina Bellack said the results should provide clear clarity as to whether the animal that was filmed by a young resident was a wild boar or possibly a lioness.

The search began after a video that a witness gave to police. According to the police's initial assessment, a big cat could be seen on it. More than a hundred officers were deployed to find the animal. Helicopters, thermal imaging cameras and tracking dogs were also used. Despite the 30-hour operation, no reliable observations could be made.

After analyzing the images, experts said on Friday that it was most likely not a predator, but a wild boar. Mayor Michael Grubert (SPD) and the police announced that no evidence of a lioness had been found. The authorities no longer saw an acute danger and lifted the warning.

The decision to carry out the operation despite high costs was defended by Brandenburg's Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU). The safety of the population is the top priority, said Stübgen.

Now it remains to be seen what results the analyzes of the feces and hair samples will provide. The population is curious to know whether it is actually a wild boar or perhaps a lioness.
