Flame hell on Rhodes: Berlin family has to clear hotel because of forest fires

for Yvonne, Emilia and Matthias P. should bring the vacation in Rhodes relaxation from everyday life. But instead of relaxed days on the beach, her family vacation ended in an emergency accommodation. The Berlin family from the Prenzlauer Berg district had to leave their hotel due to the devastating forest fires.

Yvonne P. (50) and her husband Matthias (47) spent twelve days in Kiotari in the south of the island with her daughter Emilia (12). Suddenly the forest fires broke out and the family had to act quickly. At first it did not look like an evacuation, but then soon all the surrounding areas turned red and the family had to leave the hotel. They fled to the flames on foot until helpful locals take them away by car. "Then we spent a night on a tennis court and one in a school," says Yvonne P.

Despite the difficult situation, the family reports on the helpfulness of the Greek population. They were cared for during escape and emergency accommodation. Yvonne P. reports: "The Greek children came in the morning and brought us breakfast, that was amazing!"

While some tourists are scared through the forest fires and cancel their trip, there are also others who are not impressed by them. An example is Felix K. (29) from Leipzig, who, despite the danger, makes a tour of Rhodes. However, he plans to avoid the fire areas and to stay in the north of the island.

The forest fires in Rhodes cause a sensation and concern not only tourists, but also the Greek population. The fire brigade and assistants are in constant use to control the fires. The exact cause of the fires is not yet known.

The events in Rhodes show how quickly the situation can change and how important it is to always point out any dangers and take appropriate safety precautions. In the coming days, there will still be an increased risk of forest fire on the island.
