The choice for the bird of 2025: a step to biodiversity

On September 3, 2023, an important Initiative starts in Germany, which is intended to promote preservation and awareness of the domestic fauna. The choice for the “Vogel of the Year” is organized this year by NABU and the Bavarian partner LBV. This year there are five impressive bird species to choose from, each telling their own history and representing challenges in nature conservation.

The meaning of this choice cannot be assessed high enough. Bird population has decreased significantly in recent decades, and many species are at risk. The choice should not only be given votes for the "bird of the year", but also an awareness of the nature conservation issues that require our attention should also be created.

  • Waldohreule ( asio otus ): This characteristic owl, often confused with feather pushing, represents the culture of the nightly living space. Her ability to fly silently and to locate her prey acoustically makes it a fascinating part of our ecosystem. She demands: "Ears on: Nature!"
  • Kranich ( grus grus ): With majestic appearance and the calls known for its barz dances, the crane is ideal as an ambassador for the protection of wetlands. The elegantly pulling birds are more than just a spectacular natural spectacle; They also include the topic of climate protection into their goal: "Wet feet for the climate!"
  • Hausrotchwanz ( Phoenicurus Ochruros ): This little songbird, which spends its summer in our gardens, suffers from the decline in insect population. His slogan "Courage to the gap!" Speaks the need to maintain natural habitats that offer him nesting opportunities.

The choice itself will be open until October 10, 2023, and interested parties can hand in their vote at www.vofundesjahres.de . The winner is announced on the same day. Since the introduction in 1971, the election has not only raised biodiversity, but also raised awareness of ecological topics.
