Security of care for discounts: no bottlenecks in sight

shock message for pharmaceutical supply? None! The alarming reports on possible supply bottlenecks in medication are absolutely exaggerated. The AOK (Wido) scientific institute makes it clear that the supply of drugs in Germany is extremely stable!

Currently only 735 of over 63,000 medicines available are registered as non -delivery. This means that fabulous 98.8 percent of the medication are available! And even in times of delivery bottlenecks, there are usually good alternatives. Helmut Schröder, the head of the Wido, makes a clear point: "Delivery bottlenecks do not immediately mean that there is a lack of care!"

The facts at a glance

The analysis shows that availability is secured for 99.9 percent of the medication prescribed in 2023. If a medication is temporarily not available, equivalent alternatives are usually available. This applies particularly to the medication that is secured with discount contracts-even 100 percent supply can be guaranteed here!

Schröder demands more transparency in pharmaceutical supply - an imperative step to show which medication are available when. "We can follow every step in the parcel delivery process, why not with drugs?" he asks. A clever thought! Here all the actors involved, from manufacturers to pharmacies, could disclose their delivery status in order to better counteract regional bottlenecks.

discount contracts bring savings

Another interesting aspect: The AOK discount contracts not only contribute to availability, but also reduce the costs! In 2023, these contracts saved a total of 5.83 billion euros. This ensures economical and high -quality care for the patients and relieves the health insurance companies!

The market for medicines is global and Germany only makes a small part of it - around four percent. According to Schröder, this has a low impact on global care. "To blame the drug discount contracts for globally occurring delivery bottlenecks is completely absurd," said the pharmaceutical expert.

Despite isolated problems, patients should not worry - the care remains stable! The pharmacies have sufficient resources to provide the necessary medication quickly and reliably. Schröder is confident: "Together we find the necessary alternatives for every patient in a range of more than 63,000 drugs!"

that sounds promising, right? So let's stay optimistic if we pick up our medication next time!
