Uni-Kiez conflict: container village or research construction?
The planned container village for 260 refugees on a fallow unibles in Berlin-Dahlem causes resentment, especially at the Free University. The university actually plans to build a building for teaching and research and feels over the same time. The President of the University, Günter Ziegler, complained that the university management was not involved in the measure and found out about the plans from the newspaper. The FU had already housed refugees in an emergency accommodation in the sports hall of the university in the past. However, she pointed out that the property in question is required for its own construction projects according to 2023.
Berlin's refugee coordinator, Albrecht Broemme, defends the planned accommodation of refugees on the universe area and emphasizes that the university could use the area by the start of construction. He asks the university chancellor to provide a time for the planned new building. At the end of March, the Senate approved further container villages to counter the lack of apartments for refugees. Despite resistance, the containers are to be built on different fallow land in the city.
Most new locations are planned in the Eastern districts of Berlin, which further tightens the unequal distribution of refugees in the city. The Pankow district is already taking a significant share of the refugees and is now being burdened. Criticism of the resistance to the refugee accommodation on the universe area in Steglitz-Zehlendorf expressed some users on social media. They questioned the university's cosmopolitanism in view of the protest against the planned refugee accommodation.
