Uni-containerdorf in Berlin-Dahlem: Dispute over refugee accommodation
A plot of land on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem is soon to serve as a container village for 260 refugees. This encounters resistance in the Free University, which plans to build a building for teaching and research there. The university feels over, as it only learned from the newspaper from the Senate plans. The university management had not approved this measure.
Free University of Berlin is fundamentally ready to support refugee people, but emphasizes that the planned area will be needed for its own construction work from 2023. The university proposed to use empty buildings from the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks for Refugee Accommodation and pointed out the high renovation needs of its own location.
The special representative for refugee questions at the Senate, Broemme, emphasizes that the accommodation of refugees on the wasting property is possible as long as it is not used elsewhere. The decision on the construction of the container village is still pending because possible concerns about nature conservation must be examined.
Senate decided at the end of March 16 more container villages
The Senate decided at the end of March to build 16 additional container villages in order to counteract the lack of living space for refugees. The locations are mainly planned in the eastern part of the city, which increases the imbalance in the distribution of refugees. Districts such as Pankow, who have already taken up many refugees, should receive additional container villages.
The resistance to the accommodation of refugees can not only be observed in the Free University, but also in other distinguished districts of Berlin. Critics comment on both social media as well as on site and question solidarity and openness to refugees, especially in institutions such as FU Berlin.
