Temporary game streets in Berlin: No project stops despite medium cuts
The Berlin transport administration has announced that the temporary play streets in the city will receive despite the fears that the projects could be hired based on medium cuts. State Secretary Britta Behrendt (CDU) assured that "in the end it will not be at the expense of the game streets".
In the budget draft, the funds in all areas were reduced in a flat rate, which also concerns the game streets. It is planned to reduce the money from the state budget from currently 180,000 euros to 50,000 euros each for the years 2024 and 2025. These cuts have triggered the initiators of the project and in the district policy.
The first temporary play street was set up in Böckhstraße in Kreuzberg in August 2019 by the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office. Since then, streets have been blocked for car traffic in various districts for a certain period of time. This enables children to play there and the neighbors to meet.
It is often just shorter road sections that are temporarily blocked to play. There are now 24 such streets in Berlin, ten of which are located in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.
The temporary play streets are very popular and help to ensure that children can play safely outside and social interactions are encouraged between the residents. Reducing the funds for this project would therefore be unfortunate.
Despite the cuts, State Secretary Behrendt assures that the game streets are preserved and alternative financing options are checked. The Berlin transport administration has recognized the positive effects of the temporary play streets.
