Forgotten story: The prisoner of war camp in Lichtenrade

In the streets of Lichtenrade, where the memories of cruel times are lurking, an impressive addition to the history of this region has now been revealed: an informative table that is reminiscent of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp! Since 1941 this place has been a scene of terror - a prisoner of war camps between Bornhagenweg and Pechsteinstrasse. From 1943 to 1945, it became one of around 100 outside camps that had the purpose of exploiting prisoners through cruel forced labor.

The conditions were inhuman! The prisoners were forced to do the hardest physical work every day, such as the elimination of ruins from air raids and the construction of air -raid shelters. Here they were constantly exposed to the danger of life, because even the defusing of aviation bombs represented a game with death! The horrors of this time were no secret for the civilian population of Lichtenrade - the traces of horror were omnipresent.

The day of liberation

Historically significant was April 23, 1945, when the Red Army finally freed Lichtenrade. A ray of hope in the middle of the dark, which relieved the suffering of the people in this region a little. After the war, public office and the local high school first found a home in the barracks before they were finally inhabited by refugees from the former German eastern areas. But the spirit of this dark past remains.

The newly unveiled information board serves as a memorial. It is intended to keep the memory of inhumanity and keep the reality of the events in mind. An important step in order not to be forgotten and honor the voices of those who suffered in the shadow of some of the darkest chapters in human history.
