Hope street: Johanniter and Eleos save people from Ukraine
Help for Ukraine: The project "Street of Hope"
In the middle of the continuing conflict in Ukraine, the Johanniter, together with their partner Eleos, launched an important humanitarian project that bears the name "Street of Hope". This project aims to offer people from the particularly affected front areas, especially in Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk, to offer the urgently needed support and to evacuate them in safe regions.
The military conflicts that have recently been reinforced, especially in the Russian region of Kursk, have further tightened the security situation in Ukraine. In the past ten days, over 200 attacks with precision -led ammunition have been reported that caused great damage. The evacuation of 183 settlements in the Sumy region was ordered, which means that more than 20,000 people, including about 2,500 children, have to be brought to safety. The Johanniter and Eleos are working to bring these people into safe accommodations outside the danger zone.
Florian Beck, Johanniter program officer for Ukraine, explains the versatility of their support: "It is not just about evacuation itself, but also about accompanying people with legal questions and doctor visits to ensure a smooth integration process." For many evacuated, taking personal objects often remains impossible, which is why the aid organizations also distribute food and hygiene packages in addition to evacuation. This comprehensive help is intended to help those affected to alleviate the effects of the war.
The Johanniter and Eleos also provide emergency aid in the war -plagued regions of Kharkiv and Donetsk. There they face the challenge of supporting people who are not willing to leave their homeland. "We try to reach people at their place of residence if security allows this," explains Olena Yevsekova, project employee at Eleos. This help focuses particularly on the hardest accessible settlements near the front lines.
The importance of the work of the Johanniter is undeniable. In 2023 they have already reached over 327,000 people in Ukraine and their programs mainly focus on emergency help measures in the east and south of the country. In addition, the support of women's shelters in various regions continues to offer refuge and psychological care.
The Johanniter rely on financial support in order to maintain their humanitarian projects. Interested parties can donate under the keyword "Ukraine":
