Burglary in Museum: Robber gang excavated
It was one of the most sensational burglaries in recent years: at the end of 2022 burglars entered the Celts and Roman Museum in Manching (Bavaria) and opened doors and showcases. The prey: 483 Celtic gold coins. Now four Germans are in custody. At least three of the men were probably repeat offenders. They face up to ten years in prison.
The police tracked down the perpetrators by initially targeting the trio Alexander K. (42), Robert K. (46) and Jörn M. (50) from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. One of the reasons was that they regularly ordered black overalls on the Internet. The investigators monitored their phones and observed them.
On Tuesday, Robert K. met at home with Maximilian S. (43), the owner of a large wine trade in Berlin-Tempelhof. When S. left the property, he was overwhelmed by police officers. He had 18 lumps of gold in a bag with him. Then K. and the other two suspects were arrested.
The investigators have a theory: Maximilian S. could have bought the gold at the meeting or it was divided among the perpetrators.
The four arrest warrants against the quartet were issued for severe band theft. The men are silent about the allegations. The police were able to secure half a kilogram of the three kilogram treasure. It is feared that the thieves have melted the rest of the approximately 2100 year old coins.
The police also check whether the men are also responsible for other burglaries. Because in other burglaries, DNA traces from Manching were found. Some of the crime scenes are Nienhagen (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), Pressath (Bavaria), Edermünde (Hesse) and Winsen (Lower Saxony).
The arrest of the robber gang represents the successful completion of a lengthy investigation. The stolen coins are of great archaeological value and a cultural asset of national importance. The slump into the museum had caused great excitement in public. It remains to be seen how the trial of the perpetrators will be and whether further details about their procedure will be known.
