SPD agreed on Severin Fischer as an OB candidate for Potsdam!
Potsdam, Deutschland - The SPD nominated Severin Fischer as the official mayor candidate for the upcoming election in September 2025. This happened during a party congress of the SPD district, on which fishermen was chosen with impressive 89.3 percent of the votes (100 yes votes, 8 no votes, 4 abstentions). Fischer, a native Franke, has been living in Berlin for 20 years and has worked in various political offices, most recently as State Secretary in the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Business under Franziska Giffey. Critics complain that he may have too little reference to Potsdam, where the SPD has posted the mayor since 1990. His predecessor Mike Schubert was voted out in a citizens' decision.
fischer sees the importance of the topic of living as central and emphasizes the need for municipal and cooperative building. Other priorities of his political agenda are the turnaround and resilience compared to extreme weather events, as well as the strengthening of local public transport as well as cycling and foot traffic. Alma Kleen, co-boss of the Potsdam SPD, described Fischer as the person of the departure and reliability. He also receives support from former SPD supervisors such as Jann Jakobs and the long-time government spokesman Florian Engels.
competition in the OB race
fischer will not be the only candidate in the race for the mayor. The AfD has nominated Chaled-Uwe Said as its candidate while the CDU Willo Göpel sends into the race. In addition, Noosha Aubel, a non -party candidate, and Jörn Karlipp, who competes as a single applicant, have expressed interest in the candidacy. Bernd Blase also plans to apply as a single applicant.
In the last mayor election, which took place on October 14, 2023, Mike Schubert won with 55.3 percent of the vote against Martina Trauth (Die Linke), who received 44.7 percent. This election was an important turning point, since Schubert received the most votes in the first ballot with 32.2 percent of the votes, but did not achieve an absolute majority, which led to the runoff election.
The challenges of choice
The turnout was 53 percent at the first ballot on September 23, 2023, while the overall turnout was only 37.8 percent on October 14th. In this election, a candidate needed at least 15 percent of the votes of the Potsdam eligible to win the election, which corresponds to around 21,500 votes. It is also interesting that Fischer plans to move to Potsdam if he is elected mayor.
The upcoming election campaign will be shaped by the challenges that Potsdam voters have employed in recent years. Topics such as living space, traffic and climate adjustment are crucial to gain the trust of citizens and to be more successful than its competitors. The coming months will show whether Severin Fischer succeeds in leading the SPD to the top again in Potsdam.
