Successful return: School at the Gartenfeld renovated after seven years

New shine for the school on the garden field: an important step for the educational landscape in Spandau

The return to the school on the garden field at Gartenfelder Straße 81 not only marks the end of intensive renovation work, but also a new beginning for the school community. In 2017, due to extensive construction work and renovation problems, this was temporarily outsourced to Seecktstraße 2 in order to make necessary changes. After seven years, the school is finally back in its traditional premises and celebrated this with a ceremonial handover.

The Spandau district tried intensively for the renovation of the school and invested around 10 million euros. This measure not only included a basic energetic renovation, but also the elimination of serious fire protection and static deficiencies. The school environment was not only made more secure, but also made accessible to all students. Above all, the barrier -free access should be emphasized, as they formed an essential part of the modernization strategy.

"It is a relief to see that from the multiple challenges that we encountered by construction defects and legal disputes, we ultimately result in a modern school environment," explained Dr. Carola Brückner, district councilor for education, culture, sports and facility management. The completion of the school not only represents an architectural statement, but also gives the approximately 50 children who already learn in the new premises, the opportunity to learn in a friendly and inviting place.

Return to Gartenfelder Strasse is an exciting event for the school community. The originally planned measures were expanded to an extensive concept, which included modernization of the classrooms, the redesign of the school hop areas and the cultivation of a music room. "The school on the garden field shines in new splendor and now offers an excellent space for joint learning and development," said district mayor Frank Wewigt.

In the future, however, part of the school community will remain at Seecktstraße 2. A modular supplementary construction will be created there, which is specially designed for children with special education needs. This is done in accordance with the increasing number of students in the area of special education support, which can be observed in recent years. The decision to continue to use the Seecktstraße as the headquarters of the school on the garden field illustrates the adaptability and commitment of the entire school team.

In view of the challenges in the construction system, which are often associated with delays and unexpected costs, the building authority of the Facility Management service unit has made a valuable contribution to ensuring a successful completion of the project. The school community can now look forward to a modern and safe learning environment that meets both the needs of the students and the requirements for modern schools.
