Broadcasting contribution in the crisis: MDR plans drastic savings!
The future of the broadcasting contribution is on the brink! The ARD institutions expect an increase of 58 cents to a total of 18.94 euros from 2025. The Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk (MDR) and Bavarian Radio (BR) have already approved economic plans that are based on this increase in premium, although the federal states have so far refused a decision. According to BZ Berlin , the MDR lacks at least 10 million euros in the event of a failure to increase from January, which could result in the need for further savings by 2028.
savings and uncertainties
MDR director Ralf Ludwig emphasized that financial planning would require drastic savings without the new fee. "If the recommended contribution adjustment fails, the MDR must save over 160 million euros in the next four years," said Ludwig. According to Sächsische.de , the current income of the MDR is insufficient due to stagnating fees in order to to maintain ongoing operation.
The KEF, the committee for determining the financial requirements, has already recommended an increase, while some prime ministers have spoken out against the increase. If the increase is not approved, this could not only put pressure on the MDR, but the entire public service broadcasting system, since the total income for 2022 was already around 8.57 billion euros and the MDR receives only part of it.
