Veterinary control refutes accusations against food suppliers
On May 15, 2024, an unannounced control of the food supplier at the Ukraine Ill's Center Tegel took place through the Veterinary and Food Supervision Reinickendorf, after allegations of the quality of the food supply to the refugees had arisen in the evening show of the Bundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB). The allegations made included a locked cup of milk pudding with maggots on the lid, a bitten toast bread with black discoloration and a cooked egg with mold inside.
The on-site control showed that all best-preserving data of the foods existing in the caterer warehouse were nor was it valid and that neither moldy toasted bread nor maggots were found on the milk pudding. Thus, the suspicions of spoiled foods could not be confirmed. The operators of the Ukraine Illenic Center Tegel emphasize that they take the quality of food supply seriously and take all the necessary measures to ensure that the refugees are adequately cared for.
Interestingly, district councilor Julia Schrod-Thiel (CDU) noted that similar images (milk pudding, bitten toast bread) of the Veterinary and Food Supervision Reinickendorf were sent back to the end of August 2023. Even then, the allegations could not be confirmed during a check. After a closer examination, it turned out that the best-before date of the puddings was on January 15, 2021, which was about 14 months before the Ukraine Ill's Center was commissioned.These incidents throw a light on sensitivity and responsibility that are necessary in terms of food supply in such institutions. It also shows how important it is to consider all available information and backgrounds before allegations are raised.
