Reinickendorf pedals for climate protection: Record when cycling!
Reinickendorf, Deutschland - On June 20, 2025, the "Falkostungs" campaign and closing event took place in Reinickendorf. The event offered the participants the opportunity to learn more about fair trade over coffee, iced tea and snacks. Reinickendorf has been officially certified as a "Fairtrade Town" since September 2024, which illustrates the district's commitment to sustainable trade. In addition, the district's air conditioning center informed about various climate protection measures as well as sports and health offers.
Another highlight of the event was the coding of bicycles by the police, which contributes to increasing the safety of cyclists. This initiative falls into a larger framework of activities that take place in the district.
City bike campaign 2025
Reinickendorf took part in the nationwide campaign city bike, which takes place annually and was carried out this year from May 16 to June 5. The aim of the campaign is to collect as many kilometers as possible by bike. In 2025, thousands of Berliners also took part in the initiative. Over 35,000 participants covered a total of 6.9 million kilometers this year and avoided 1,138 tons of CO2 emissions, which is a new record.
The ADFC Berlin was active with 252 members and 12 subteams and took eighth place in overall ranking. The most successful underteams were:
- ADFC Pankow: 27 active, 10,511 km
- ADFC women*: 36 active, 8,608 km
- ADFC Steglitz-Zehlendorf: 21 active, 7,388 km
eligible to participate are all who live in Berlin, work, are active in an association or attend a (high) school. The kilometers can be entered via an app or manually, and all routes covered, including private trips, can flow into the count. The campaign is organized by the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment, supported by ADFC Berlin e. V. and RBB 88.8.
sustainable mobility and health
The promotion of cycling has multi -layered advantages. According to the Environmental Federal Agency up to 30 % of car journeys could be shifted to bicycle traffic in metropolitan areas. This change would not only contribute to relieving the environment, but would also ensure an improvement in air quality. Cycling has been proven to have positive effects on health and can increase life expectancy by up to 14 months.
The current situation shows that over 40 % of car journeys in large German cities are shorter than 5 km, where the bicycle is often the fastest means of transport. In order to further increase bicycle traffic, both investment and non-investive measures are necessary. This includes safe and comfortable cycle paths as well as modern bicycle parking systems.
The present initiative to register their own district team of participating in the city bike came from committed employees. The organization of the campaign is accompanied by the district's climate position, which supports the existing efforts to sustainability and health.
It becomes clear that Reinickendorf not only promotes fair trade, but also actively contributes to improving cycling infrastructure and thus promoting a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. This commitment represents an essential basis for a sustainable thinking society.
