American lazy brood of the bees: restricted area in Reinickendorf-Ost
After months of efforts to contain the spread of the American foul brood of the bees, the restricted area in Reinickendorf-Ost can finally be lifted. The bee disease first performed in the neighboring district of Mitte in October 2023 and had led to extensive measures to contain the spread of the pathogen.
The district councilor for order, environment and transport, Julia Schrod-Thiel (CDU), announced that all beekeeping in the affected restricted area was examined clinically and microbiologically and no indications of the presence of the pathogen of the American lazy brood were more determined. In the middle, the bee disease is also considered.
Nevertheless, the restricted area remains in the Heiligensee district of Reinickendorf, since measures to combat the American foul brood are still taken there. Concerned citizens can obtain current information on the website of the district administration at www.berlin.de/ba-reinickendorf/politik-und-verwaltung/aemter/ordungsamt/veterinaer-und
It can be seen that the measures to contain the American foul brood were successful and the restricted area can now be lifted. Bee population plays a crucial role in the ecosystem and it is important to protect it from threatening diseases.
In the following table, some facts about the American foul brood of the bees are listed:
| Disease | American lazy brood of the bees |
| ———————- | ——————————- |
| Trade | Bacterium paenibacillus larvae |
| Transfer | Through contaminated food and feed juice |
| Control methods | Burning the infected beehives, antibiotic treatment of bees |
| Effects | High death rate in bee colonies, economic losses for beekeepers |
| Prevention | Hygiene measures in beehives, regular controls of the bee colonies |
It is important that beekeepers are still attentive and take measures to prevent diseases in their bee colonies. The lifting of the blocking area is a first step in the right direction to ensure the health of the bee population in the region.
