Ralf Stegner defends participation in controversial peace demo in Berlin

The politician Ralf Stegner, a well-known face of the SPD, causes a sensation with his courageous statements about the upcoming peace demonstration in Berlin. On Thursday, the member of the Bundestag will be at the controversial event, and he leaves no doubt that he does not want to be pushed out by populist currents!

"The SPD has a long tradition within the peace movement," explains Stegner in the RBB24 Inforadio. He makes it clear that it is not just about Sahra Wagenknecht or the BSW. "The peace movement has always been diverse and different voices are necessary!" But that's exactly where it hooks: too much focus on the appearances of Wagenknecht harms the matter, says Stegner. "I am not distracted by the attention to others!" He calls instead of a shocking insight into the political landscape, which is increasingly shaped by populism in eastern Germany.

Another chapter in the peace debate

Everyone knows that the planned demonstration will be directed against German arms deliveries to Ukraine and Israel. Stegner is convinced that even military solutions are not the solution: "We have to make more diplomatic efforts!" And that's just the beginning! The contrast program for the war is clear when the SPD politician emphasizes: "There is no alternative to peace, and we should finally understand that!"

Although he wants to support the demonstration, he did not sign the official call. "There is a social democratic call - that is the way I choose," says Stegner with emphasis. This hybrid between support and independence makes waves in the political debate.

And how does he stand by critic Rita Wagenknecht, who attracts many to demonstration? "The fascination for you is not my thing," countered Stegner, looking back on the massive consequences of populism in regions such as Saxony and Thuringia.

"I'm not here to pour coals into the fire, but to make it clear that we have to stand up for peace!" He gives his listeners on the way. These claims are not just words in the wind, they are a call to everyone who fights for a better, peaceful future!
