Turkey lawsuit: Animal welfare organizations are calling for the end of factory farming

Request against the turkey fatten

In a spectacular legal dispute, animal welfare organizations complain people for animal rights Baden-Württemberg e. V. and the Albert Schweitzer Foundation for our fellow worlds against the turkey mast common in Germany. Your goal? Bring about a rethink in animal husbandry, because the predicament and the dangerous surpluses violate the Animal Welfare Act. A brave step for the animals!

But the challenge is great. The Administrative Court (VGH) in Mannheim mostly approved the arguments of the animal rights activists in March 2024. This could pave the way for a fundamental reform of turkey posture, but not all points were successfully challenged. In particular, the assertion that the most frequently grown turkey lines are aggravated so far remained undetected.

The tiresome topic of animal welfare standards

The focus of the lawsuit is a specific operation in the Schwäbisch Hall district. Here the housing conditions were classified by the responsible veterinary office as a "good turkey farming" - a judgment that the animal welfare organizations consider questionable. The standards set by the poultry industry do not take into account the real needs of the animals. The VGH Mannheim recognizes this and describes the current practice as not species -appropriate.

The numbers speak volumes: Too many animals live in the space that is too small, without the necessary retreat. This leads to devastating consequences such as cannibalism and painful injuries. A shameful picture for turkey posture in Germany! As far as breeding is concerned, the turkeys grow so quickly that they suffer from it. Male animals of the most common breeding line "B.U.T. 6" reach a weight of 22.5 kg within 21 weeks - an overload that many animals do not survive.

These cruel keeping conditions could change through a directional judgment: A ban on conventional turkey farming could be on the agenda! However, the VGH did not want to take any radical measures and only ordered a reassessment. The questionable practice of shortening snaps remains.

The next round in animal protection fight

The game result has not yet been determined. The animal welfare organizations, the veterinary office and the turkey maker have lodged a complaint and are calling for a revision of the judgment. Now it is up to the Federal Administrative Court to decide whether this revision is approved. The decision will be decisive for the future of animal rights and could fundamentally influence the fate of thousands of turkeys!

hope for change - the animal rights activists are ready!

People for animal rights Baden-Württemberg e. V. has been a voice for the animals since 1983 and fights the suffering in factory farming. Together with the Albert Schweitzer Foundation, which is also committed to the mass production of animals, they are warriors of animal welfare and will not give up until the conditions for the turkeys are improved!

The struggle for the rights of the animals is far from over, and the echo of this lawsuit could have far -reaching consequences for all animal husbandry in Germany. The audience is called to stand up for the animals and to put animal welfare in the spotlight!
