Porn and Enlightenment: Forsa study shows how school and parents can support young people

The internet has no limits. Here you can find almost anything - including pornographic content, which are reserved for adults, at least the law provides. The fact that it often looks different in reality is the result of a current Forsa online survey on behalf of the EU initiative ClickSafe. According to the numbers of the survey and some other studies, young people aged 14 years have seen porn, which depends on many factors. For example, the type of education, possible taboos, media literacy in school, the image of women in our society and the type of pornography consumed plays a role. Different feelings can occur when contacting pornography, from excitement to disgust everything is possible. It is important to get the topic out of the dirty corner.

In order to achieve this, it would make sense not to leave the information about sexuality to the porno -sides alone, but to actively address the topic at school, e.g. in organic lessons. For this, Klicksafe offers corresponding teaching material called 'Let's Talk About Porn'. Here is not only talked about pornography, but also about questions of puberty, good educational websites, sexual identity and diversity as well as about body pictures and digital border violations.

Another topic that belongs to school is the class chat. Porn or nude pictures are often sent, which the experts considered absolutely inappropriate. It is important to set up clear rules here, e.g. that only school content can be shared. Klicksafe has published a poster entitled 'Our rules for the class chat'.

When it comes to pornography and sexuality, the parents are also in demand. Despite the uncomfortableness of the topic, parents should try to speak openly with their children. There are surveys that show that children also want their parents as a contact in this area. Protective settings on digital devices are particularly important for younger children in order to prevent children from encountering pornographic content unintentionally. The website 'Medien-kindersicher.de'.

offers a good resource

The Forsa online survey on behalf of Klicksafe also showed that parents would like more information about pornography through schools or initiatives such as clicksafe. ClickSafe has developed teaching materials for teachers and there are many events on the topic on the Safer Internet Day on February 6th. Further information is available on the website www.klicksafe.de.

In summary, it should be noted that young people at the age of 14 have seen the majority of porn, which depends on various factors. It is important to get the topic out of the taboo zone and both schools and parents have to contribute to ensuring adequate information about sexuality.

The following table provides an overview of the results of the Forsa online survey on behalf of Klicksafe:

| Age of young people | Percentage that has already seen porn |
| ———————- | ———————————— |
| 14 years | 55% |
| 15 years | 69% |
| 16 years | 75% |
| 17 years | 80% |

These figures clarify that pornography is widespread in young people today and therefore needs the topic of adequate information.

It remains to be hoped that schools and parents work together to better educate the young people and at the same time restrict access to pornographic material. This is the only way to learn young people to deal responsibly with these content and not to see them as a standard for their own sexuality.
